To make a question in English we normally use "Do "or "Does" at the beginning of the sentence, except for some verbs like To Be and Modal verbs.
Study the examples below:
Positive | : | We like ice cream. |
Question
|
:
|
Do we like ice cream?
|
Positive | : | She likes ice cream. |
Question | : | Does she like ice cream? |
We can see from the examples that we use "Do" if the subjects are plural pronouns or nouns (We, They, People, etc.) and we use "Does" if the subjects are third person singular pronouns or singular nouns (He, She, Tony, a boy, etc.).
We can also see that in questions we do not use -s or -es with the verbs.
Study the pattern below.
she | ||
he | ||
Does | it | |
Maria | ||
my father | ||
they | swim everyday? | |
we | ||
Do | I | |
you | ||
my brother and I | ||
people |
For the verb "to be", "Do" and "Does" are not used. Instead, we put the verb (is, am, or are) at the beginning.
